The grate is the grid that allows air to be supplied to the fire from below. The grid pattern also separates the ash from the wood and makes it easier to dispose of. The grate is loose on the grate frame at the bottom of the fireplace and can be easily removed. It is the part of the fireplace that often needs to be replaced over time as it is exposed to both heat and air, which is hard on the cast iron.
